downloaded videos not listed after updating to Plus version 4.5.2562.0

(1) I updated VDownloader recently and now only find a fraction (say around 10%) of my previously downloaded videos in VDownloader.

(2) Newly downloaded videos don't show either. However, they are present in the download folder and can be opened with conventional video players.

Would appreciate your assistance. - is there any file index that need to be updated or any option to scan the download folder?

Previous versions of VDownloader did not show this problem and displayed all my downloaded new and old videos.

hi, i was about to report the same problem in another post,

firstly, the dLed video list is cleared  whole or partially (randomely after restart) , with "keep videos" checkbox on.

secondly, as mentioned in another post, the prompt message 'please specify output format' not showing in the foreground and blocking dowload from starting, even if "automatic DL" is checked along with "immediate DL"

thirdly, the missing play side tab, that feature was GOLD, with that play tab Vdowloader was like a video file browser/manager, if you could bring it back it would solve partially the problem first mentionned.

fourth, the program freezes and refuses commands (or stack them in some buffer maybe without mentioning it) when the top circle is spinning, and it can take a couple of minutes to become active again.

five, hitting the overlaying play button while hovering a dowloaded video, lauches TWO times a video, with VLC 2.2.2, while right click select play works fine

also, the convert tab is missing thumbnails.

thumbnails everywhere is what makes Vdownloader beautiful along with it's slick interface.

thks, that was my report. for 4.5.2562.0

I experienced exactly the same problems. Have you received any response? What a pity - instead of improving the quality of the software, it seems to be deteriorating...

Dear Gary and KConstant,

Thank you very much for your feedback and I am sorry that this is happening to you.

I will reply to each issue presented by Gary, as I believe that you're both experiencing the issues:

  1. Can you please confirm that the option "Clear finished videos on restart", which is in the "Options -> Configurations" menu is UNCHECKED and, if so, that your videos are being cleared from this list?
  2. We have fixed this issue in an unscheduled update (which didn't change the version number). Can you please reinstall VDownloader by clicking in https://getvdownloader.com/?p=direct and let me know if the issue is gone?
  3. Unfortunately, we felt that this feature was not as good as we wanted it to be and temporarily removed it. Let me assure you that this is temporary and that this feature will be reinstated soon.
  4. Can you please tell me more about this? In what circumstances does it happen? Are you processing downloads in the background when this happens?
  5. I could not reproduce this, but I will check with our development to see if they can find the cause.
  6. Thumbnails on convert tab are something that we cannot offer, unfortunately. Since the convert tab is based on videos that are already stored in your computer, fetching the thumbnails would potentially cause performance issues (such as the ones you described in problem fourth) and we believe it is safer not to show the thumbnails in order to allow a smoother experience.

Again, thank you very much for your feedback and I'm looking forward to hearing from both.

hi diogo, after installing same version from link provided,

1, the problem persists, the boxes are un/checked correctly.

2, the message is still there, pops up in the background have to click on taskbar to bring it foreground, and clicking twice, on that same OK box, then the address converts correctly to the name of the youtube video copied in the clipboard, but then nothing happens (immediate DL checked, no save dialog pop), i have to click on blue Download button manually and then it starts.

3, looking ahead for the come back ;)

4, not the entire screen and tabs are frozen, in fact it's not a freeze but rather an unresponsive state, where my commands are ignored or stacked randomely, until the little wheel in the right top corner finishes spinning, ah yes i hear a 'windows tone" warning/sound notification, if my comand is ignored..

5, i have VLC 2.2.2 weatherwax, i click once on the thumb of the video, download tab, what i get is two instances of the same video launched, i have to close one and keep one,

VLC 2.0.5 twoflower, same issue, two windows of the  same video,

MediaPLayerClassic MPC WORKS FINE, i am on WIN 8.1 64 with administrative rights given to VDL but i need my VLC back lol

6, i understand about the issue on the convert tab, getting the play tab back will attenuate some of the problems,

UPDATE more bugs to crush lol,

7, the right click play is grayed out, impossible to play a video trough right clik, or double click, only trough one time click, in thumbs view of course, as for detail view still in download tab IT IS IMPOSSIBLE to start a video no double click or right click, i remember that this right click play issue was recurrent throughout the successive updates.

8, the quality of the video or resolution of the downloaded video in download tab through thumb view, is wrongly communicated, for ex, i download a 720p with a preference of 1080 fhd, though able to be identified through the save dialog correctly as 720p, in the DL tab, it is specified as 1080FHD not a s 720p, it could be great if it was reported correctly since the save dialog is often on a skipped state.

THX and i hope these are going to get fixed soon especially 1 and 2 and also 7, these are quite annoying, have a good day sir. and the nickname is gray mouser the fictious character not gary lol

Thanks for your response, Diogo. To cut it short - I am still not happy with the new versions of VDownloader. I have used the software for several years have compared it with several competitive programs, and have been quite happy with the results and the simple operations of VDownloader. Several months ago, the new version(s) had problems with the integrated player and have now become rather time consuming to operate - exactly as Gary described. The should at least have the custom3ers offered to keep their old versions of given them a chance to reinstall older version that definitely have been a lot more user friendly!

Over time, I have accumulated a large number of videos. After your recommendation to install the new version of the Downloader, all of them have disappeared. On the positive side, the 2 test videos I have downloaded are still listed under downloads, also after the Downloader was closed and re-started. Rewinding da not show any videos although there is a large number stored ...in a folder called vdownloader\converted videos. I can hardly believe that there is no option to scan videos from a folder into the VDownloader index.

Now to your individual points:

  1. Can you please confirm that the option "Clear finished videos on restart", which is in the "Options -> Configurations" menu is UNCHECKED and, if so, that your videos are being cleared from this list? Option "clear finished downloads on restart" is unchecked.
  2. We have fixed this issue in an unscheduled update (which didn't change the version number). Can you please reinstall VDownloader by clicking in https://getvdownloader.com/?p=direct and let me know if the issue is gone? Reinstall did not change anything other than all previously listed downloaded videos have disappeared.
  3. Unfortunately, we felt that this feature was not as good as we wanted it to be and temporarily removed it. Let me assure you that this is temporary and that this feature will be reinstated soon. Fai enough, changed may be useful, particularly if they result in improvements - but the customers should be informed about details and offered a choice to use previous well known and satisfactory versions.
  4. Can you please tell me more about this? In what circumstances does it happen? Are you processing downloads in the background when this happens? No background nor any special operations. Downloading as I have done for years.
  5. I could not reproduce this, but I will check with our development to see if they can find the cause. Strange that this cannot be reproduced. - it all started in late 2016 when the player stopped working and I had to use the rewind button to show and play my videos.
  6. Thumbnails on convert tab are something that we cannot offer, unfortunately. Since the convert tab is based on videos that are already stored in your computer, fetching the thumbnails would potentially cause performance issues (such as the ones you described in problem fourth) and we believe it is safer not to show the thumbnails in order to allow a smoother experience.- Thumbnails are very useful - to me it was OK to see them in Downloads and Rewind.

I am really rather frustrated as this has been going on for quire some time and has recently even deteriorated. I hope you will at least send me a download link for an older version without all these new shortcomings and advise me on how to import video files into the download- and rewind folders of VDownloader..

Thanks, Kurt

Well, this communication seems to be moving backward. None of the listed problems has been directly addressed and dealt with.

How long are we as customers supposed to wait for useful advice and/or a fixed version of VDownloader?

My patience is slowly coming to an end and I wonder whether I should not ask customer protection agencies including the BBB for assistance and publication of those issues.

Fortunately, I found an old version of the software in my archives (dated July 2015) and installed it. VOILA - works perfectly well for me; just one click for downloads, the video-tiles remain in position even after repeated boots and I can use the integrated player for viewing the downloads... Why can't you make the new software versions work similarly problem-free???

I sincerely hope that a satisfactory solution will be found very soon!

Hello, Kurt

The issue of VDownloader not saving completed downloads and, thus, not displaying them after application restart was present in previous release, however it was fixed, and newly downloaded videos must be displayed in the Download list as long as "Clear finished downloads on restart" is NOT checked in the Settings window. Later today there will be available a new release for download with this issue fixed.

1. I will wait a few days and then download the new version. As mentioned I have installed version 4.0.1216.0 and overall am quite happy. Just hope that the new version will work similarly well as compared to my old version!.

2. I have saved a few hundred clips in my VDownloader folder - is there any way that I can get them back into the into the Downloader index?

3.  With the new versions, I have to press several keys before a video is saved - download format, download etc. - previously one click sufficed and the video file was saved in the video download folder.

4. For the rest of the setting see my list 1. - 6. below - I have tried all recommended configurations!

GM

version 4 5 2588

Good Work!

downloading is again working no more 'output format' message.

my list is still showing, have to give it some restarting tests to be sure the list is still kept,

on the other hand i can't manage to bring the save dialog before downloading, lets see if others can confirm this,

and thx for the quick fix

Hi Gray,

Thanks for the feedback.

Please let me know if the "list is gone" issue has been resolved for good after you restart a few times.

Also, we have changed the behaviour of VDownloader slightly. When you have the "Immediately download video URL's copied to clipboard" option enabled, the SaveAs dialog is bypassed. We believe that this behaviour is more user-friendly, as the SaveAs dialog was preventing downloads from starting immediately (which is what the option does). Is this behaviour undesirable for you?
